Establishing the cross-border cooperation to safeguard the declining wild forest reindeer population

The wild forest reindeer of Kainuu and Russian Karelia form a joint population. The knowledge about the wild forest reindeer status in Russian Karelia in insufficient. Updating this knowledge is necessary when managing the species in Finland.

Goals

The population size of Russian Karelia?s wild forest reindeer will be monitored by aerial survey. Karelia?s wild forest reindeer individuals will be collared with GPS-collars for finding out the important pasture lands and migration routes. The joint action plan will be compiled.

Impact of research

The updated information of the Kainuu-Karelia?s wild forest reindeer population status will be used in game management plans and actions in the both countries.
