Whitefish is one of the most important fish species in the Gulf of Bothnia fisheries. Millions of one-summer old whitefish fingerlings are released in the Gulf of Bothnia each year to compensate adverse effects of human activities and to enhance fisheries. However, only little is known about the results of the stocking programs or factors affecting the results. By marking released groups of fingerlings with fluorescent pigment marking method, we aim to learn more on the effects of the whitefish releases and causes behind these effects. The results can be used to enhance whitefish stocks and to guide the compensatory stocking programs. Goals To learn more on the results of whitefish stocking programs in the Gulf of Bothnia Impact of research The results help to increase the benefits and decrease the adverse effects of whitefish stocking.
