Global environmental change, liberalisation of trade and market changes, among others, drive the continuous dynamics and changes of agrifood systems all over the world. Agrifood systems are characterized by multiple interactions between the agricultural production process, its resource use, environmental consequences and management choices. Changes in drivers and their impact on interactions require integrated analyses. Integrated assessment and modelling (IAM) tools are developed to support such analyses. The project will tackle the challenges, that is model development, evaluation and research capacity building related to designing problem-oriented modelling frameworks. This will be done through carrying out three interlinked activities: (i) Evaluation and further development of soil-plant and cropping systems models (with focus on Finnish /Nordic conditions), (ii) Developing, improving and extending crop rotation (GamRot) and farm type models (SAMA), (iii) Integration of improved biophysical and ecological process model results in the agricultural sector model (DREMFIA).
