Present maintenance as well as catches of critically endangered landlocked salmon are based totally on stockings. Landlocked salmon is one of the most highly-rated catch species especially among the troll-fishers. The attractiveness of landlocked salmon is based on its fast growth rate and greater attainable maximum size (well over 10 kilograms) compared with brown trout. Survival of stocked landlocked salmon however, has been poor. Catches have been moderate when the stocking numbers are taken into account and the return rate of spawners has continuously been very low (less than 0,05 %). Therefore, as a part of the Institutes stocking research program, a project concentrating on the quality and survival of reared landlocked salmon juveniles was started. Tavoitteet Major goal of the project is to find out various means to increase the survival rate of the stocked landlocked salmon. Therefore we aim to study various aspects possibly connected to the quality of juveniles during the rearing process. The post-stocking survival in different lakes will be monitored with large-scale taggings of various landlocked salmon juveniles. Vaikuttavuus The results will help in developing of the maintenance stockings as well as in increasing of the catch of landlocked salmon.
