Sustainable aquaculture and responsible management of fishery resources in North-West Russia

Aquaculture has been growing extremely fast and the sector has become an important source of livelihood in rural areas of North-West Russia. Management of natural fish stocks and other environmental awareness including fish health questions has also arisen.

Goals

The overall purpose of the program is to support sustainable and responsible growth of aquaculture and fisheries sectors in North-West Russia. The program aims are thus creation of new employment opportunities and finally improvement of rural livelihood in target areas.

Results

The aims of the program are conforming collaboration of fisheries and veterinary authorities and researchers in Finland and Russia, and development of networks which promote R&D-cooperation and business opportunities between the countries.

The main sectors of the program are:
1. Diversification and sustainable development of aquaculture production.
2. Responsible management of fishery resources.

Diversification and sustainable development of aquaculture production has three subareas; Capacity building for the development of industry orientated aquaculture research in North-West Russia, encouragement of the use of best possible rearing material and fish health. Responsible management of fishery resources includes improvement of fishing possibilities and good quality of the products.
