Talvivaara - fish populations

Paluu Hankehaaviin

As assigned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (12 November 2012), the aim is to examine heavy metal concentrations accumulated in the tissue of fish found in the area affected by the Talvivaara mine and any changes in the tissue, focusing especially on commercially exploited fish species. Samples are taken by sampling fish in the lakes located in the area affected by the mine and in control lakes, and the samples are sent to the Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira for analysis. Evira also sends extra samples to other operators, such as STUK (Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, Finland) and the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).

Tulokset

Samples were taken in the area affected by the Talvivaara mine and in the control lakes as planned (sampling round 2 in February-March 2013 and round 3 in May-June 2013). Fish sampling was mainly carried out using gillnets of different mesh sizes. Fish traps were also used during the open water season. In addition, samples for Laakajärvi were also collected from a local professional fisherman. A total of 1,234 samples were sent to the Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira, 20% of which were from the control lakes.
Information on the progress of the sampling project has been provided on the FGFRI?s website http://www.rktl.fi/kala/kalavesien_tila/talvivaaran_kalanaytteet/
