The Lipgene project adopts a truly integrated approach to examine the interaction of food supply and genes in the metabolic syndrome, in an attempt to redress the global tide of obesity and its complications. In particular Lipgene aims: To examine how variation in the composition of dietary fats interacts with common human genetic variations to influence the development of the metabolic syndrome This research will involve the analysis of existing dietary, biochemical, clinical and genetic data from 13,000 subjects and the initiation of a comprehensive human feeding intervention study. To enable greater availability of food products that can enhance human health. In particular the programme will generate: A linseed oil product enriched with the dietary fatty acids naturally present in fish oil (long chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids;long chain n-3 PUFA), and which are known to play a role in reducing the risk of the metabolic syndrome. A protocol for feeding dairy cows, which changes the composition of milk fat to one with less saturates, less trans-fats and more monounsaturates (i.e. to one with a more favourable fatty acid profile). The production and supply of poultry meat enriched with long chain n-3 PUFA will be examined. To raise consumer awareness about the metabolic syndrome and the potential health risks associated with it. Lipgene will also assess consumer attitudes to the newly developed agro-food technologies, and the usefulness of these technologies as a dietary strategy in tackling the metabolic syndrome. To examine the economic barriers to introducing the new agro-food technologies, and the cost of dietary versus pharmaceutical approaches to managing the metabolic syndrome. To conduct a wide-ranging effective dissemination programme (www.nutrition.org.uk/Lipgene) which will increase awareness and understanding of: the need to integrate diet and genetics in tackling the metabolic syndrome. the potential of the agro-food technologies to combat the metabolic syndrome. consumer and economic perspectives of the disease and its treatment.
