The SUSDEV-CHINA project, coordinated by MTT, is a multidisciplinary joint research undertaking of the European Union's International Cooperation programme (EU-INCO). The research partners alongside MTT are Imperial College London, Tongji University of Shanghai, and six research institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS): the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, the Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research, the Institute of Policy and Management, the Institute of Genetic and Developmental Biology, the Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, and the Institute of Earth Environment. The project comprises nine work packages which study the main issues of the agroecosystem and rural-urban interaction as related to water resources management, land use, economic development and the welfare of society. The project area includes five regions including Beijing and Shanghai. The main objective is to reach a better understanding of and to improve sustainable agroecosystem management and rural-urban interaction in China in order to provide environmental and socio-economic factors for an integrated sustainable development strategy.
