The objective of this study is to develop a methodology for measuring air-soil fluxes of POPs with the aid of SPMDs. The compound groups to be studied are the past (i.e. PCB) and present POPs (i.e. PBDEs). Direction of the air-surface flux indicates whether the soil is a source (PCBs) or sink (PBDEs) of these compounds. Experimental values of the air-surface fluxes will be compared against model predictions. The knowledge of air-surface fluxes is needed to understand the global cycling and redistribution of POPs. This is the first time the passive samplers will be used for studying air-surface fluxes of POPs. The outcome of the method development will be applied for monitoring of POPs at contaminated land sites in the Finnish environment.
