An intensive hydrobiological monitoring has been carried out at Lake Valkea-Kotinen (Evo, South Finland) since 1990 as part of the Integrated Monitoring (IM) Programme. This is an international and multidisciplinary programme, the aim of which is to study effects of long-range transboundary air pollution in permanent objectives, which are in each case a lake and its catchment area. It was initiated in the mid-1980s as a joint Nordic cooperation programme. After a pilot phase it was accepted as a permanent programme of the United Nations Economic Commission of Europe (UN ECE) with the name "International Co-operative Programme on Integrated Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Ecosystems". The studies carried out at Valkea-Kotinen belong to the Subprogramme "Hydrobiology of Lakes". In addition to Valkea-Kotinen, hydrobiological parameters have been monitored on three other lakes in Finland. Valkea-Kotinen is, however, the only lake of IM Programme monitored continuously since 1990. P hysico-chemical properties of water, plankton metabolism, chlorophyll concentration, and phytoplankton and zooplankton species composition and quantities in Valkea-Kotinen have been monitored with a high sampling frequency. Besides these parameters, also macrophytes, benthic fauna, fish and sedimentation belong to the hydrobiological programme. Lake Valkea-Kotinen is typical small humic lake of the boreal forest zone. Its features are high attenuation of light, and a shallowness of the epilimnion which results in high physico-chemical gradients in the water column, and the significant trophic role of allochthonous dissolved organic matter.
