Monitoring of radio-tagged salmon smolt migration in the regulated River Iijoki

Paluu Hankehaaviin

One key element in restoring salmon stocks in regulated rivers is the possibility of fish to migrate between freshwater and the sea. In the regulated river Iijoki salmon recovery activities was started in 2008. The biological part of the recovery activities has been concentrated to adult salmon passage problems and migration and spawning behavior of transplanted adults. Instead, relatively little is known about the migration and survival of salmon smolts during their downstream migration. This study is trying to fulfill this knowledge deficit.

Tavoitteet

The aim of this study is to estimate the survival of hatchery reared and wild salmon smolts in the regulated River Iijoki and to find out the possible bottlenecks for the survival (e.g. turbine and impoundment mortality).

Vaikuttavuus

The results of the study can be used in the recovery actions in the River Iijoki and in other regulated rivers and they may help to decrease the mortality of smolts during their downstream migration.
